The first of September, which fell on the second: a festive day through the eyes of journalism students
For the third year in a row, educators begin the school year to the wail of sirens and the sounds of explosions. Newly graduated students are eager to sit down at their desks, but security conditions do not always allow universities to organize offline studies.
Using autonomy, higher education institutions organize the educational process based on needs and opportunities. However, the issue of optimality of the format remains debatable. On the one hand, we are talking about offline, because if the electricity is turned off, many students will not be able to join the online pair. On the other hand, it is pedaled online, since the constant interruption of classes by anxiety nullifies the teacher’s efforts to impart at least a minimal amount of knowledge in the classroom.
While educators are concerned with organizational issues, young people are happy to meet with their classmates and want to immerse themselves in student life.
What do students expect from their studies this year and how do they perceive the holiday of the first bell in universities? We spoke with girls and boys studying at the Dnipro Polytechnic National University, majoring in Journalism, and asked them to share their impressions of today.
Evelina, first year. The celebration of the first bell at the university is a completely different scale. There are many buildings, many students. A cool opportunity fair that was new to me. In general, there is a lot of new stuff. You get lost, where to run, who to meet, which territory to explore first. However, it is an exciting process.
I expect many new opportunities, interesting events in which I will participate from my studies. And most importantly, I hope that I will be in time for everything.

Danylo, first year. My first thought was to wake up immediately, buy a ticket, go from Pavlograd to Dnipro, and stomp to the university. There you can find your group, meet everyone and have a good time.
On school holidays, there was such a vibe, as they say in youth slang, when everyone stands in a row, dressed in monotonous suits, ties… In student life, everything is much more democratic, there is a free style in clothing and behavior. And in general, a different attitude to celebrations, which are now perceived differently in the conditions of a full-scale war.
Considering the fact that I have been working in my specialty for two years, I would like to receive a bachelor’s degree, confirm the knowledge I have acquired during my work, and also share the achievements that I already have.
Taisia, first year. I woke up with the thought that I would go to university, gain new experiences and meet new people. The celebration of the first bell at the university is much larger than at school. I have already met many teachers, I liked them all. I think I will be fine.
Angelina, first year. I woke up in the dormitory and realized that this was a new life. During the quarantine and the war, I got used to a calm monotonous life, when you know what will happen tomorrow. Now a new stage has begun, accompanied by both fear and inspiration at the same time.
She was impressed by the program of initiation into students. It was clear that everyone at the university is passionate about their work. This is no longer a school hobby. The band that performed are professional musicians, they live by what they do.
Attention, 3rd year. The first thought was “we should go to the university, get to know the first-year students, get them interested in learning, make them fall in love with their specialty and achieve great heights in it.”
Oleksandra, 3rd year. Today I woke up with the thought: Wow, already the third year! Back to the university and with it to work. Today is also the first pair! Two years have passed since the beginning of my studies, and I look back as if it was only yesterday that I came to the university, I looked with wide eyes at this journalism, at teachers, at classmates. Now the third stream of journalists has started training. It’s a strange feeling like you’re getting old.
I hope that this year my grades will not get worse, but only better. I chose many subjects for study myself, so I think it will be interesting.
Evgenia, 3rd year. I also thought in the morning that I am already a third-year student, although it seems like only yesterday I entered the first year. I came to the university to see new faces and find out what they are like – new student journalists.
Denis, 1st year. I woke up today with only one thought, today is dedication to students, we need to gather and go to the university. There was a big holiday here – many faculties, specialties, many wonderful boys and girls. A completely different scale, not the same as in the chamber conditions of the school. The architecture here is so impressive. I dream of sitting in the courtyard when there are no people and reading a book after steaming. And in general, I see that the university has much more opportunities. Here you can express your opinion, highlight events as you perceive them. I have many ideas and projects, I hope that I will be able to realize myself at the university.
Andrii, 1st year. Woke up excited about today. He gathered his strength and went to the university to get his dream profession. The organization of the holiday here is much better than at school, where we had to stand in boring lines under the sun for hours. It was very difficult. And here everything went perfectly. In general, the atmosphere is better here, I hope that I have a bright future here.
