The first university course on cycling planning has started in Ukraine

In February 2025, for the first time in Ukrainian higher education started academic pilot training course “Planning and organization of bicycle mobility”. It was developed by the National Transport University in partnership with “Association of Cyclists of Kyiv” (U-Cycle) and the “Bike City consulting” project team.

“Currently, there is a critical shortage of specialists in the planning of bicycle infrastructure in Ukraine who are capable of organizing safe bicycle traffic in communities and at the regional level.

At the same time, until recently, Ukrainian universities did not have any academic discipline focused on bicycle mobility. Therefore, the course was developed and launched in order to solve this problem and create conditions for the training of professional transport engineers and bicycle mobility planners in cities and communities.” — note the authors of the program.

The course is intended for master’s students of the National Transport University and includes theoretical and practical components. Within the practical part, students develop a course project dedicated to planning a bicycle network for a specific community.

During their studies, they master the methods of creating strategies for the development of bicycle infrastructure, analyze the condition of city streets and propose solutions for the integration of bicycle transport into the general transport system.
