The former mayor of Kupyansk, accused of treason, probably died after the assassination attempt in Russia

The former mayor of the Ukrainian city of Kupyansk, Hennadiy Matsegora, probably died in Russia as a result of an assassination attempt. He was shot near his house in the Belgorod region. In Ukraine, a former official was accused of treason for cooperating with the Russian military, which occupied the city in 2022.

He later clarified that the information required confirmation.

Earlier it was reported that the official was shot in Stary Oskol and was taken to a hospital in Moscow.

Matsehor was elected mayor of Kupyansk in 2020. In 2022, the city was occupied by Russian troops. The official recorded a video message in which he said that the military, prosecutor’s office, territorial defense and SBU had left the city. He urged residents to cooperate with the Russian military.

We were left alone. … I made this decision. The decision is mine. I am responsible for everything that happens in the city. I’ve been in the city all this time and I’ll stay further“, his appeal read. In June, he participated in a meeting on the creation of a Russian administration in the occupied part of the Kharkiv region.

In the indictment submitted by the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office to the court in Kharkiv, it was said that Matsehor “in every possible way facilitated” the Russian military, providing them with transport, housing, fuel and food.

“Due to his actions, the territory of the Ukrainian Kupyansk came out of the administrative subordination of the state authorities of Ukraine”, – claimed the investigation. He was threatened with life imprisonment.

About an attempt on an official was the first to report June 8, military intelligence of Ukraine. The official was called a “traitor of the Ukrainian people” in the message. The killing of civilian officials in the course of war can be considered a war crime under international law and violates the criminal laws of both Russia and Ukraine.
