The French parliament dismissed the government

The French parliament passed a vote of no confidence in the government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier, leading to his resignation. It was the first time since 1962 that a French government was forced to resign. About this reported edition of Le Figaro.

The vote of no confidence was supported by 331 deputies, while 289 voted against. Thus, the government of Michel Barnier, which lasted less than three months, became the shortest in the history of the Fifth Republic. This result was not unexpected, as Barnier’s government did not have a majority in parliament. The joint efforts of the left bloc “New People’s Front” and the ultra-right “National Union” proved to be enough to eliminate him.

The main reason was the adoption of the budget for 2025, which caused severe criticism. The budget included spending cuts of 60 billion euros, mostly through tax increases and cuts in social benefits. This decision was perceived as ignoring the difficult social situation in the country.

The leader of the far-right “National Union” party, Jordan Bardella, said that his political force supported the resignation of the government because the budget was passed without consultation with the parliament. According to Bardella, such a step demonstrates the government’s indifference to the real problems of French citizens.
