The government does not plan to create separate units in the police to protect animals

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine does not see the need to create separate divisions within the structure of the National Police that would focus on protecting animals from cruelty.

About this it is said in Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal’s response to the petition, which received the required number of votes for consideration.

In his answer, Shmyhal notes that although the issue of protecting animals from cruelty is important, it is not appropriate to create separate units for this task at the moment.

He emphasizes that the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the National Police are already taking measures to strengthen the training of law enforcement officers in this area.

The prime minister also drew attention to the fact that in the conditions of martial law, the primary task of the security and defense sector bodies of Ukraine is the defense of the country, and therefore the creation of new units is not currently a priority.

In addition, the response to the petition emphasizes that the statistics show a low level of offenses in the field of animal protection. In particular, during 2023, out of 4.8 million recorded administrative offenses, only 0.1% related to this area, and 0.05% out of 369,000 criminal offenses.
