The humanitarian situation in Ukraine is worsening, the number of victims among the civilian population is increasing – UN
At a meeting of the UN Security Council on Thursday, officials pointed out that the humanitarian situation in Ukraine continues to deteriorate, and casualties among the civilian population are increasing, Voice of America reports.
“In total, since February 2022, since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 10,810 civilians have died, including 600 children. 20,556 civilians, including 1,357 children, were injured.”, – said the Assistant UN Secretary General for Political Affairs Myroslav Yencha on April 11.
According to the UN, 40% of the population of Ukraine needs humanitarian aid, its delivery is complicated by the frequency of Russian bombings.
“Attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure continue, resulting in more casualties and destruction“, Yencha added.
The representatives of the UN also noted that international humanitarian organizations are not allowed in the territories occupied by Russia, in particular in the east of Ukraine, and it is impossible to deliver humanitarian aid there.
“This is a violation of international humanitarian law that must stop immediately“, Yencha emphasized.
The UN Security Council called for an immediate ceasefire and access of humanitarian organizations to all regions of Ukraine.
