The leader of the far-right party in Bavaria called for the urgent expulsion of Ukrainian refugees from Germany

Germany has become a second home for millions of Ukrainians who were forced to leave their homes because of the war. This country provided them with access to social assistance, housing, medicine and education, creating a safe environment for them to live in a difficult time. But recently in Germany there are increasingly calls to review the attitude towards refugees. One of the most resonant was the statement of the leader of the far-right party in Bavaria, who publicly called for the immediate expulsion of Ukrainians from the country. This statement caused a wave of indignation both among the Ukrainian diaspora and among the German public, because Germany has always positioned itself as a humane state that supports the victims of war. However, political speculation on migration continues to gather momentum, especially in regions where the far-right has strong support.

A resonant political statement

The head of the “Alternatives for Germany” faction in the state parliament of Bavaria, Katrin Ebner-Steiner, known for her radical views, said that Ukrainian refugees should leave the country immediately. In her opinion, citizens of Ukraine should return to their homeland “as soon as possible”, reports  Süddeutsche Zeitung.

She justified her call by the fact that Ukrainians who receive social benefits allegedly abuse the country’s hospitality. According to her, the government should concentrate its efforts on helping its own citizens who are in difficult life circumstances. She also emphasized that Ukrainian refugees create an additional burden on the German social system.

These words became a catalyst for public debate. Human rights activists and democratic politicians condemned the statement as inciting hatred and undermining the values ​​of solidarity. Instead, a part of German society that supports the far-right expressed approval of such an initiative, seeing refugees as a threat to their own well-being.

Ukrainians in Germany

According to data as of the end of 2024, there are over a million Ukrainians living in Germany who have benefited from the EU Temporary Protection Directive. It gives them the right to residence, employment, medical care and education. Many Ukrainians have successfully integrated into German society, working in various areas of the economy, especially in industries suffering from labor shortages.

However, there are those who still depend on social assistance due to language barriers, lack of qualifications or difficulties in adapting to new conditions. It is these people who often become the object of criticism from far-right politicians.

The reaction of the authorities and society

The German government immediately condemned the far-right leader’s statement. Government representatives emphasized that supporting Ukrainians is not only a humanitarian duty, but also an important political step in resisting Russian aggression.

Human rights activists drew attention to the fact that such statements undermine trust in democratic institutions and create the risk of increasing xenophobia in society. Public organizations and activists called for strengthening of information work explaining the importance of integration of Ukrainian refugees and combating myths spread by radical politicians.

Analysts see such statements as a pre-election calculation. Using the topic of migration allows the far-right to manipulate the fears of the population, increase division in society and strengthen its electoral base. The issue of refugees turns into a tool that allows you to divert attention from the real economic and social problems of the country.

Why is this important?

Such statements create a dangerous precedent that can undermine the principles of solidarity and humanity, which are the foundations of the European community. Ukrainian refugees who survived the horrors of war need support, not accusations of excessive use of resources. Germany, which has always been an example of democratic values, must show that its principles are not influenced by populists and radicals.

Instead of inciting hatred, it is important to focus on creating the conditions for integration, which will benefit both the refugees themselves and the country that received them. Only through cooperation and mutual understanding can we ensure a peaceful and stable future for all.
