The Ministry of Culture signed memorandums with UNESCO regarding the restoration of cultural institutions

The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine signed three memoranda of cooperation with the UNESCO Representation in Ukraine and a number of national cultural institutions — Kharkiv State Scientific Library named after V. G. Korolenko, Kharkiv National University of Arts named after I.P. Kotlyarevskyi and Odesa State Music Lyceum named after Professor P.S. Stolyarskyi.

“I am sincerely grateful to UNESCO, the Japanese government and everyone who supports Ukraine in this difficult time. The readiness not to stop at formal steps, but to proceed to real actions, is especially valuable. We are working together to preserve Ukrainian cultural heritage, national memory, art and identity, – said Acting of the Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine Tetyana Berezhna.

This is already the second stage of cooperation between the Ministry of Culture and UNESCO — the first memorandum was signed within the framework of the project with the Boychuk Kyiv Academy of Arts. The new agreements provide for comprehensive measures to restore cultural infrastructure objects that were damaged as a result of Russian aggression.

“Kharkiv State Scientific Library named after V. G. Korolenko – the largest library in Eastern Ukraine with more than 7 million units of funds was seriously damaged due to Russian shelling. The memorandum provides for the modernization of the heating system of the entire library complex in order to preserve the funds and the building itself – a monument of architecture, – the message says.

Odesa State Music Lyceum named after Professor P.S. Stolyarskyi, founded by an outstanding teacher, was also affected by the blast wave in July 2023. Hundreds of windows, doors and part of the ceiling were destroyed. Thanks to the support of UNESCO and the Japanese government, the building will be restored and strengthened, which will allow the educational process to be restored and the traditions of music education to be preserved.

In March 2022, the Kharkiv National University of Arts named after I. P. Kotlyarevskyi, one of the country’s leading art universities, suffered significant destruction. Within the framework of the memorandum, UNESCO will finance the restoration of heating, water supply and sewage systems in order to create safe conditions for students to study and preserve the cultural space of the university. Financing of these projects, organization of work, technical support and implementation control are carried out by UNESCO with the support of the Japanese government.
