The Ministry of Defense plans to create a testing ground for new demining technologies with AI

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine is considering the possibility of creating a modern test site for testing the latest technologies, in particular involving artificial intelligence, which are used in demining processes. About this informs press service of the department.

This issue was discussed during a working meeting of representatives of the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Economy, the State Emergency Service, the UN Development Program and other partners. The project is aimed at improving the effectiveness of humanitarian demining, implementing innovative solutions, and exchanging experience between Ukrainian and international specialists.

The representatives of the defense department offered the participants of the meeting to join this initiative, which is being implemented by the Main Directorate of Mine Action, Civil Defense and Environmental Security.

“The test site at the disposal of the Ministry of Defense can become a unique platform for joint research, testing and training.” – explained the representative of the secretariat of the National Mine Action Agency, the head of the mine action information management department of the mine action management of the Main Directorate of Mine Action, Civil Defense and Environmental Security, Colonel Olga Drobot.

She emphasized that the development of the latest technologies makes it possible to significantly speed up the process of non-technical survey of territories, which, in turn, contributes to more effective humanitarian demining, increasing the safety of sappers and reducing risks for the civilian population.

The meeting participants also discussed new methods of analyzing satellite and aerial photographs for mapping mined areas. Particular attention was paid to the use of neural networks for automatic detection of minefields, as well as the integration of modern artificial intelligence algorithms in the planning and safe demining processes.
