The Ministry of Education and Science announced a reduction in the number of teachers in Ukraine
Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Mykhailo Vynnytskyi believes that the number of teachers in Ukraine today is excessive, and this is not just loud words, but a real fact. He stated this in podcasts “Dopamine for education”.
As Vynnytskyi explained, the current number of students and universities in Ukraine does not justify such a number of teaching staff.
“We currently have more than 100,000 teachers for one million students. One to ten. I understand that back in Yanukovych’s time – everyone remembers the infamous Tabachnyk – there was talk of reducing this ratio, making it the same as in Europe – 18 to 1. No one will do it by force“, the official said.
He also emphasized that it is precisely in this gap that the reason for the low salary of teachers lies, because there are too many of them, and not enough of students, and probably their number will decrease.
“A large number of our teachers, who worked outside academia or had lower rates, have now returned to higher education institutions. And the budgets of higher education institutions cannot withstand this, and the national budget cannot withstand it. Therefore, it is not popular, but there will be fewer teachers“, — noted Vinnytskyi.
Despite the disparity in the number of teachers, the deputy minister added that their salaries still remain inadequate, which raises questions about the financing of higher education in general.
