The Ministry of Internal Affairs provided advice on how to properly communicate with people who have returned from captivity (video)

The most important thing after the return of Ukrainian defenders from Russian captivity is not to harm them, but to give them the opportunity to recover. The Communication Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasized this on its page Facebook, reports Ukrinform.

“Do not ask about a traumatic experience for the sake of your own interest. If the person does not talk about it himself, then you should not ask “How was it there? And what did you see? What did you experience? Such questions can lead to retraumatization. It is important to show empathy, not be indifferent, communicate positively, always leave the right of choice to the person and give them time to make that choice.” – it is stated in the message

The Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasized that the experience of being in captivity cannot be devalued. If a service member is sharing their experiences, it is important to avoid phrases like “nothing terrible happened” or “everything will be fine.”

“Without permission, do not touch her, do not touch her, do not touch her personal belongings. Because when a serviceman is in captivity, he does not have his own comfort zone as such. There is no need to interfere in a person’s comfort zone at all.” – the ministry explained.

At the same time, the former prisoner needs to be motivated and supported.

“In order for a person to understand that he is in a supportive environment for himself, if there is already a certain agreement about something – for example, about meetings – it is very important to stick to it, so as not to keep the person in a state of disappointment in his own life. You need to be honest and open with a person, show your involvement and interest in his life.” – noted the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
