The Ministry of Justice has blocked the assets of 15,000 people since the beginning of the full-scale war

Since the start of the full-scale war, the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine has blocked the assets of about 15,000 people. Olena Vakulenko, Director of the Department of Sanctions Policy and Representation in Courts of the Ministry of Justice, told about the results of the department’s sanctions work.

On May 3, 2022, 110 decisions of the National Security and Defense Council regarding the application of personal sanctions to approximately 17,800 persons, of which the blocking of assets affected approximately 15,000, entered into force by presidential decrees.

The Ministry of Justice, together with other competent bodies, is engaged in searching for the property of persons subject to sanctions and checking the grounds for its confiscation. As part of this work, the department sent more than 22,000 requests to various institutions and organizations and processed almost 18,000 responses.

To date, the Ministry of Justice has filed 79 lawsuits for the confiscation of assets of sanctioned persons. In 72 cases, the courts have already made decisions, although some of them are being appealed or revised in the light of newly discovered circumstances. Among those whose property has been confiscated are Russian oligarchs, deputies, collaborators, and companies connected to Russia’s military-industrial complex.

Recall that in March of this year, the National Agency for Investigation and Asset Management (ARMA) debited UAH 137 million from the accounts of companies associated with Russian oligarchs Mykhailo Fridman and Petro Aven, who are under sanctions.
