The National Commission opposed the renaming of the penny

The National Securities and Stock Market Commission said against the adoption of bill No. 14093, which proposes to rename the “kopeck” coin to “shag”.

The commission believes that the proposed change will not bring practical benefits, but instead will cause additional financial costs for issuers. In particular, there will be a need to reissue global certificates and certificates of securities issues, which contain information about the nominal value – this will require time and money from issuers.

In the opinion of the regulator, such costs and administrative difficulties will lead to a negative perception of the legislative initiative among capital market participants.

“We believe that during the period of martial law, the legislative changes proposed by the bill are not of primary and urgent importance, and will also distract the efforts and resources of market participants from the main goal – the fastest approach of our victory. Such legislative proposals have no economic justification and feasibility, but are only a diversion of state resources from the needs of security and protection of the state from the aggressor country, the commission said.

At the same time, according to the initiators of the project, renaming the kopeck has an important symbolic meaning: now, in addition to Ukraine, kopecks remain only in enemy states – Russia and Belarus – as well as in Moldovan Transnistria.

Let us recall that in September 2024, the NBU took the initiative to return the name “step” to the coins. This proposal was supported by the Institute of History, the Institute of Linguistics, and the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance.
