The NBU said that tax authorities will not have uncontrolled access to bank secrecy
The National Bank of Ukraine will not agree to the possibility of extrajudicial access by any state body to citizens’ banking secrets. About this stated Head of the NBU Andriy Pishnyi.
“The NBU is ready to discuss the procedure and regulations, but cannot agree to uncontrolled and unlimited extrajudicial access to bank secrecy for any body.” Pyshnyi stressed.
He noted that the EU countries, which Ukraine aspires to join, have their own mechanisms for combating tax evasion, but none of them provide unlimited access to bank data.
“Therefore, it cannot be said that banking data in Ukraine will be disclosed in an uncontrolled and unregulated volume,” – Pishnyi assured.
We will remind that earlier the Minister of Finance Serhiy Marchenko expressed the opinion that employees of the State Tax Service should get access to the financial information of citizens, which is currently a bank secret:
“As the Minister of Finance, I believe that maximum transparency and openness in paying taxes is our future. And we should not be afraid to reveal bank secrecy, which we believe protects us from something. Bank secrecy protects thieves and criminals.”
In his opinion, the abolition of bank secrecy for tax authorities is inevitable within the framework of European integration. At the same time, he admitted that this could be hindered by Ukrainians’ mistrust of state institutions.
