The number of victims of the terrorist attack at the Christmas market in Magdeburg has increased to five, more than 200 victims, including a Ukrainian woman

In Magdeburg, Germany, the death toll from a terrorist attack at a Christmas market where a car plowed into a crowd has risen to five. This was announced by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who arrived at the scene of the tragedy, informs German wave.

According to Sholtz, more than 200 people were injured, among them 40 are in serious condition. The chancellor expressed his deep regret for the tragedy, emphasizing its cruelty:

“The Christmas market is a place of peace and joy. What a horror to cause so much damage there, to injure and kill so many people.”

He called on German citizens to unite in the fight against hatred.

During the attack on the Christmas market, a citizen of Ukraine was injured. This was reported by the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Heorhiy Tykhiy X social networks.

“Among the victims of the attack is a citizen of Ukraine, born in 1972. She is currently in a serious condition in one of the clinics in Germany. The Embassy of Ukraine in Germany and the consulates are in contact with the hospital and provide the necessary assistance. We sincerely hope for her speedy recovery.” – stated in the message.

According to Deutsche Welle, the suspect in the hit-and-run is a 50-year-old citizen of Saudi Arabia, who has been living in Germany for 18 years and works as a doctor. Several local media identified him as a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy practicing in Bernburg, 40 km from Magdeburg.

Journalists drew attention to the fact that the detained man was actively publishing posts on the X social network where he called himself a former Muslim and spread anti-Islamic appeals. In his messages, he also criticized the German authorities for insufficiently fighting “Islamism in Europe”.

The tragedy occurred in the evening of December 20 in the center of Magdeburg, when a car crashed into a crowd of visitors to the fair. The driver was detained at the scene.
