The old castle in Kamianets-Podilskyi is included in the list of the most innovative in Europe
The old castle from the Kamianets-Podilskyi State Historical Museum-Reserve in Khmelnytskyi region has become one of the six winners of the European competition within the XRculture project. This was announced by the Kamianets-Podilskyi State Historical Museum-Reserve.
Thanks to modern technologies, cultural heritage is now transformed into innovative holographic journeys. Visitors only need a smartphone and a small holographic pyramid.
“Imagine: holding history in your hands – and the Old Castle of Kamianets-Podilskyi comes to life in front of you. The hologram, which takes you back in time, allows you to see the majestic fortress as the ancient Podolians saw it, — the message says.
The XRculture project is designed to make Europe’s cultural heritage closer and more interactive, using XR and 3D modeling technologies.
Only six objects from different European countries were given the opportunity to become holographic “postcards of the future”:
- Bosnia and Herzegovina — Planet Sarajevo;
- Germany — “Bremen Ship” in the Maritime Museum;
- Greece – Ermoupolis, Syros Island;
- Italy – the Roman city of Augusta Bagienorum;
- Slovenia – the rotunda of St. Nicholas in Selo;
- Ukraine – the Old Castle of Kamianets-Podilskyi.
The Old Castle in Kamianets-Podilskyi is a historical fortification located on a rocky peninsula of the Smotrych River. Its main purpose is to defend the city, which was of great strategic importance for Podillia.
The fortress was formed during the 13th-17th centuries, was repeatedly rebuilt and strengthened. It withstood numerous sieges – including Tatar, Ottoman and Cossack. The castle consists of eleven towers, each of which had a separate function in the defense system.
Now the Old Castle is part of the Kamianets-Podilskyi State Historical Museum-Reserve and is an object of national importance. It remains one of the best-preserved examples of defensive architecture of medieval Ukraine.
