Government incompetence, language, corruption and injustice: Ukrainians named the main reasons for disunity
According to the results of the poll, Russian-speaking Ukrainians feel disunity somewhat more acutely. According to 35% of them, it is precisely the lack of unity that is relevant now in Ukraine.

44% of Ukrainian citizens are convinced that there is now unity in society, while a third of Ukrainians – 36% – believe that “elements of unity and disunity are equally combined” in society. Another 15% are convinced that it is more appropriate to talk about disunity now. of Ukraine They turned out to be like that the results sociological survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.
During the study of the issue, sociologists also tried to clarify with the respondents what, in their opinion, are the factors of disunity in society. The vast majority of respondents did not name a specific reason, but listed the factors that influence it.
The largest number of respondents believe that this is due to:
- facts of corruption (16%) – “a lot of people are profiting from this war” and “corruption flourishes everywhere”;
- the issue of language (14%), while the respondents did not explain what exactly they mean;
- insufficient competence in the authorities and mistrust of their actions and official information from the authorities (13%);
- the lack of justice in the difference in the burden of war, which has to be borne by all regions (11%) – “not all regions feel the threat of war” and “there is no mutual understanding between those who are at the front and those who are in the rear”;
- lack of mutual understanding and mutual assistance (9%) – “everyone for himself”;
- by the presence of collaborators and pro-Russian people (9%).
At the same time, sociologists note an increase in the mood of disunity in the direction from west to east. So, if among the residents of the western regions 50% see exactly unity, then this indicator further decreases to 36% in the east. At the same time, the share of those who see disunity is increasing from 8% to 25%.
At the same time, Russian-speaking Ukrainians feel somewhat more disconnected. According to 33% of them, it is now possible to talk more about disunity. Another 33% say more about unity, and another 33% speak equally about unity and disunity. At the same time, among Russian-speaking Ukrainians who talk about certain elements of disunity, only 28% explain it as a language issue.
The survey was conducted in the period from May 16 to 22, 2024 through telephone interviews using the method of random sampling of mobile phone numbers among 1,067 respondents who live in all regions of Ukraine in the controlled territory. However, this sample does not include residents of temporarily uncontrolled Ukrainian territories and citizens who left abroad after February 24, 2022.
