The plane carrying the president of the European Commission made an emergency landing: the influence of the Russian REB is assumed

The plane carrying the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, was forced to land in Bulgaria without using GPS. The probable cause of the incident is considered to be the action of the Russian electronic warfare complex (EW). This is reported by Financial Times.

Ursula von der Leyen was on her way from Warsaw to Plovdiv, where she was supposed to meet with Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov and visit a factory for the production of ammunition. This trip was part of her tour of EU countries, during which she discussed strengthening Europe’s defense capabilities against the backdrop of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

On board the plane von der Leyen was traveling in, the navigation system failed. Because of this, the crew had to use paper maps. The incident occurred during a flight to the city of Plovdiv. The GPS signal disappeared in the airport area. The plane continued to circle in the air for about an hour, after which the pilots decided to land it using analog maps.

The air traffic control of Bulgaria confirmed the fact of the incident. It was emphasized there that since February 2022, a noticeable increase in the number of GPS jamming cases has been recorded, and later signal substitutions began to occur.

Russia replied that the information provided was allegedly “incorrect.”
