The Prosecutor General’s Office reported that four Ukrainians were suspected of stealing funds from foreigners’ cards

Attackers used social engineering techniques to obtain OTP passwords from their victims. Using these passwords, they added cards to their Apple Pay and Google Pay wallets without the owners’ knowledge.

According to the investigation, the suspects used social engineering methods to obtain an OTP password from the victims, which they used to authenticate their cards in their Apple Pay and Google Pay wallets without their knowledge. Violating the verification procedure, criminals withdrew funds from these cards to accounts under their control, opened in advance in one of the banks. In this way, they stole funds from the cards of foreign citizens in the total amount of almost 1.5 million hryvnias.

Bank clients of the USA, France, Great Britain, Spain, Poland, the Arab Emirates and other countries of the world were among the deceived. Law enforcement officers conducted a series of authorized searches on the territory of the city of Kyiv, as well as Sumy, Cherkasy and Odesa regions, in particular in the call center. During the searches, computer equipment and mobile phones containing information confirming the criminal activities of the suspects were seized.

At present, precautionary measures have been taken against them. Investigations are ongoing with the aim of bringing to justice all participants in this illegal scheme.

The pre-trial investigation is carried out by investigators of the Main Investigative Department of the National Police of Ukraine under the operational support of employees of the SBU Cyber ​​Security Department.
