The UN has received evidence of Russia’s supply of ballistic missiles from North Korea
The head of the Conflict Armament Research (CAR) organization, John Leff, presented to the UN Security Council “irrefutable” evidence that the remains of ballistic missiles found in Ukraine were supplied by North Korea.
It informs AP.
During the meeting of the Security Council, the United States and its Western allies accused Russia and North Korea of violating the UN embargo on arms exports from North Korea.
Leff provided a detailed analysis of the remains of the missile that hit Kharkiv on January 2. CAR documented the engine, tail section and nearly 300 components produced by 26 companies from eight countries and determined it was either a KN-23 or KN-24 missile manufactured in 2023 in North Korea.
“The organization came to this conclusion based on the unique characteristics of the missile, the presence of Korean characters on some components and other signs and components dating back to the earlier period before 2023., – said Leff.
CAR also tested three more identical North Korean missiles that hit Kyiv and Zaporizhia earlier this year.
In addition, the organization discovered additional conventional weapons, including an artillery shell manufactured in 1977, which had not previously been observed on the battlefield in Ukraine.
The Security Council discussed the illegal supply of weapons from North Korea at the request of France, Japan, South Korea, Great Britain and the United States.
UN Disarmament Chief Izumi Nakamitsu told the Council that a group of experts had reviewed Ukraine’s report on the missile debris it had discovered.
The US representative said CAR’s independent findings corroborate open source reports. He also stated that in addition to dozens of missiles transferred to Russia by North Korea, it also illegally transported more than 11,000 containers of ammunition.
