The United States vetoed the UN Security Council resolution on the situation in the Gaza Strip

The United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that called for “immediate, unconditional and permanent” a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip and a commitment by Israel to lift all restrictions on the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave. reports Reuters.

The document also called for the immediate, dignified and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other armed groups. The resolution was supported by 14 out of 15 members of the Security Council. Its consideration took place after the UN officially declared a famine in the Gaza Strip against the backdrop of Israel’s almost two-year war with the Hamas group.

Deputy US special representative for the Middle East, Morgan Ortagus, said the proposed text does not sufficiently condemn Hamas and does not recognize Israel’s right to self-defense.

“Hamas is responsible for starting and continuing this war. Israel has accepted proposed terms that could end the war, but Hamas continues to reject them. This war could end today if Hamas released its hostages and laid down its weapons, Ortagus said before the UN Security Council vote.

The Ambassador of Israel to the UN, Danny Danon, announced that the Prime Minister of the country, Benjamin Netanyahu, after his speech at the annual meeting of the UN General Assembly, will go to Washington, where he will meet with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, on September 29. In addition, the UN Security Council plans to hold a high-level meeting on the situation in Gaza on September 23.
