Czech government resigns
The Czech government, led by Prime Minister Petr Fiala, leader of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS), has decided to resign. Radio Prague International reported.
The cabinet of ministers is resigning after the constitutive session of the newly elected parliament. According to the Czech constitution, President Petr Pavel will accept the resignation of the Fiala government, after which the current ministers will temporarily continue to perform their duties until a new government is formed. Fiala said that he would personally submit his resignation to the president.
Petr Fiala’s government is considered pro-Ukrainian, as it has actively supported Ukraine politically, militarily, and humanitarianly since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Under his leadership, the Czech Republic became one of the first countries to provide Ukraine with tanks, artillery, and ammunition. In March 2022, Fiala personally visited Kyiv, demonstrating solidarity with the Ukrainian people. The government also supported tightening sanctions against Russia and advocated for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
As a reminder, on October 27, the Czech President instructed the leader of the populist ANO party, Andrej Babis, who won the parliamentary elections, to hold negotiations with other political forces on the formation of a new government. On November 3, Babis signed a coalition agreement with the far-right SPD and the “Motorists” movement.
