The Verkhovna Rada has decided to dismiss Andriy Kostin from the post of Prosecutor General
On October 29, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a resolution allowing the President of Ukraine to dismiss Andriy Kostin from the post of Prosecutor General. Kostin himself was personally present at the meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Law Enforcement and took part in the parliament session.
It will be recalled that on October 22, Kostin announced his decision to resign, stressing that he supports the position of President Volodymyr Zelenskyi regarding the strengthening of responsibility for the unlawful provision of disability and pension benefits. The Attorney General stated the need not only for legislative changes, but also for personal and political accountability for those who committed violations.
Kostin thanked the President and the Verkhovna Rada for their trust and noted that he considers his decision to resign correct in the current circumstances. It is currently unknown who will become the next head of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
Earlier, on October 25, the Prosecutor General’s Office announced that the Council of Prosecutors supported the amendments to the Law “On the Prosecutor’s Office”, which prevent prosecutors from receiving pensions at the same time as their salaries. According to the proposed amendments, pensions for years of service will be paid only after dismissal from work, establishing the principle: either salary or pension. The development of these changes will be submitted to the Verkhovna Rada for further consideration.
