The volume of exports by railway increased by more than one and a half times during the year

During the last six months, the total volume of transportation of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” amounted to about 90 million tons. This is 28% more than in January-June last year. The share of cargo transportation abroad increased most noticeably. Export volumes increased to 45 million tons in January-June. This is 59% more than in the same period of 2023.

“We are recording quite positive dynamics of cargo transportation in the first half of 2024. It is important that, in addition to the total volume of transportation, the export of strategically important cargo – grain crops – has increased by 43% compared to last year. This is very important for strengthening the country’s economy. But we are already seeing growth volumes of transportation of non-standard – loss-making cargo, which is a challenge for the financial stability of the company”. – Yevhen Lyashchenko, chairman of the board of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia”, said.

Although during the previous six months, the main cargoes were grain and ore, the last few months have seen an increase in the volume of transportation of non-core and unprofitable cargoes.

In January-June 2024, the largest volumes of transportation were:

• iron and manganese ore – 22.9 million tons;
• grain cargoes – 22.5 million tons;
• hard coal – 12.5 million tons;
• construction materials – 13.7 million tons.

In the first six months of this year, freight transportation by Ukrzaliznytsia amounted to:

• in domestic traffic – 40 million tons (+3%);
• for export – 45 million tons (+59%);
• for import – 5 million tons (+62%).
