Mortality in Ukraine in 2024 was almost three times higher than the birth rate

For data Ministry of Justice, in 2024, 176,600 newborns were recorded in Ukraine, which is 5.8% less than in 2023, when 187,300 children were born. At the same time, the number of deaths remains almost unchanged – 495 thousand against 496.2 thousand in the previous year. Thus, the death rate exceeded the birth rate by 2.8 times.

Kyiv traditionally remains the leader in terms of the number of newborns, where 19,700 babies were born in 2024. Among the regions with the highest birth rates:

  • Lviv Oblast – 15.6 thousand;
  • Dnipropetrovsk region – 14 thousand;
  • Odeshchyna – 12.5 thousand;
  • Kyiv region – 10.2 thousand.

The most deaths were registered in the Dnipropetrovsk region – 53,200 cases. Other regions with the highest indicators:

  • Kyiv – 35.5 thousand;
  • Kharkiv Oblast – 34.8 thousand;
  • Odesa – 32.1 thousand;
  • Lviv region – 31.4 thousand.

The worst demographic situation is observed in the Ukrainian-controlled parts of the Kherson and Donetsk regions, where the death rate exceeds the birth rate by 11 and 8.5 times, respectively.

The best indicators are in the Rivne (1.6 times) and Volyn (1.7 times) regions, where the demographic situation is relatively stable.

The situation with the birth rate in Ukraine is worsening: in 2023, a third fewer children were born than before a full-scale invasion.

According to the estimates of the US CIA, Ukraine has one of the highest mortality rates and the lowest birth rate in the world, which poses serious problems for the state in the preservation of human potential and economic future.
