The water area of the Odessa port “Pivdenny” was closed due to a vegetable oil leak

As a result of the recent attacks on the infrastructure of the port of Pivdenny near Odessa, a vegetable oil leak occurred, which caused the water area to be temporarily closed until the consequences were completely eliminated. This was reported in a statement by the Ukrainian Ports Authority on December 24 and by the head of the Odessa OVA, Oleh Kiper.

According to the Ukrainian Ports Authority and the head of the Odessa OVA, Oleh Kiper, the port was under constant attack for the first two days after the shelling, which is why work to localize the leak was carried out only during breaks between air raids.

Specialists gradually blocked the water area with boom barriers, which were fully installed after the situation stabilized.

The report notes that the leak concerns organic vegetable oil, which is subject to natural decomposition. The port administration, together with the relevant services, is taking all possible measures to prevent the spread of pollution, taking into account safety and weather conditions.

The State Ecological Inspectorate of the South-Western District and the Odessa Central Environmental and Health Service of the Ministry of Health are monitoring the water condition, recording environmental damage. The coast is also fenced for safety.
