Trump condemns $300bn in aid to Ukraine amid massive flooding in the US
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has sharply criticized the allocation of almost $300 billion in aid to Ukraine, while hurricane victims in the United States receive only $750 each for emergency needs. In his interview with the Fox News channel, Trump highlighted the gap between the scale of foreign aid and the domestic needs of Americans affected by natural disasters, including Hurricane Helen.
“We have invested almost 300 billion in Ukraine, and at the same time they (US President Joe Biden’s administration – ed.) are offering people $750 for emergency needs in connection with the strongest hurricane we have ever had.”Trump said.
He also expressed dissatisfaction with the way the government, led by President Joe Biden, is responding to the effects of the natural disaster, especially in states such as North Carolina.
Trump shared his impressions after visiting the state, where he spent the whole day, and drew attention to the extent of the destruction.
“It’s a terrible situation. I’ve been in North Carolina all day and I’ve seen very few people other than those who are badly hurt. One person was sitting on a rock because they had nothing left.”, – the president told the candidate.
What is known about Hurricane Helen
Hurricane Helen formed in the Gulf of Mexico and hit Florida on September 26 with winds of up to 225 km/h. It caused significant destruction and caused catastrophic flooding in the southeastern United States, which the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) called “historic”. As a result of this hurricane, more than 200 people died, most of whom lived in North Carolina. Rescuers are continuing their search for the missing, of whom there are currently hundreds. Also, more than 750,000 homes remain without electricity after the natural disaster, which became the most destructive since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
