Ukraine celebrates Independence Day: 33 years of freedom and indomitability

Today, Ukraine celebrates the 33rd anniversary of its independence — a day that does not just mark a date on the calendar, but is a symbol of the will, national pride and indomitability of our people. Independence Day is a holiday that unites millions of hearts in a common sense of belonging to a great nation that has gone through turbulent times and still preserved its dignity, its language, culture and its own way.
In 1991, when Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union, the country embarked on a new path full of challenges, struggles, and great opportunities. 33 years ago, our people made a choice in favor of freedom, and this choice changed the course of history. Since the declaration of independence, Ukraine has followed its own, often difficult path, but every step along the way strengthens our national identity, shapes our uniqueness and cohesion.
The first years of independence were extremely difficult. The transition from a centrally planned economy to a market economy was accompanied by severe social and economic problems. Hyperinflation, unemployment, corruption and political instability were the main challenges faced by the young state. Over the years, Ukrainians have gone through many trials, but they made us stronger. Ukraine has proven that it is capable not only of enduring, but also of developing, building a new, fairer society in which freedom, equality and human dignity are valued.
