Ukraine confiscated Russian railcars worth UAH 2.2 billion

Ukraine confiscated 1,592 wagons that belonged to Russia and were used to transport commercial cargo. This was announced by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.

“The government has decided to designate the State Property Fund as the body managing this property with its subsequent transfer to Ukrzaliznytsia. With this decision, we are launching a mechanism for seizing the aggressor’s property and its further use,” she said.

The estimated cost of the wagons is about UAH 2.2 billion. They are in working condition and can be used until the end of their service life for cargo transportation, including military ones.

The wagons belonged to sanctioned residents of the Russian Federation, in particular VEB-Leasing, the state development corporation VEB. RF, JSC State Transport Leasing Company, JSC Nord – a subsidiary of Sberbank Leasing, and other Russian companies in the field of finance and logistics.

Before the full-scale invasion of 2022, the wagons were transported across the territory of Ukraine and EU countries. After the outbreak of hostilities, they remained on the territory of Ukraine, were arrested, and last year were confiscated.
