Ukraine Introduces European Standards of Market Surveillance of Products

The government has approved changes to market surveillance legislation for the implementation of European safety standards and protection of consumer rights in Ukraine.

About this reported Deputy Minister of Economy Tetyana Berezhna.

“We are bringing Ukraine closer to European standards for the supervision of the quality of non-food products. The proposed changes strengthen control over the safety of goods sold in Ukraine, including online trade and imports. A new approach to market surveillance and closer cooperation with the EU will limit unfair competition and support responsible a business that cares about quality”, the message says.

The draft law provides for a number of important changes. In particular, it is proposed to extend state market supervision to online trade, which will ensure a level playing field for online stores and conventional points of sale, as well as increase the safety of goods.

It is also planned to strengthen the protection of consumer rights through the introduction of European norms, which will allow more effective control of compliance of non-food products with standards. In addition, the law defines requirements for fulfillment and information society service providers, which will facilitate a more prompt response to challenges.

Another innovation is the mandatory presence of authorized representatives in Ukraine for certain types of products, such as electrical equipment, protective equipment and toys, which will allow for a faster response to potential risks.
