Ukraine learns demining in Cambodia: training sappers becomes a priority

During the working trip to Cambodia, the Ukrainian delegation studied demining techniques that are successfully used by local specialists.

Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Bohdan Drapyaty reported on the steps taken to improve the training of sappers.
“We have plans to build a new infrastructure for training and upgrading the skills of pyrotechnicians. Minister Ihor Klymenko identified this as one of the priorities in the work of our department for this year. Therefore, the experience of SMAS – Cambodia Mine Action Center with its comprehensive approach is useful for us. The better trained specialists are, the better they will work“, – said Bohdan Drapyatyi.
Key points of cooperation:
- A joint meeting of Ukrainian, Japanese and Cambodian experts on the basis of the Cambodian Mine Action Center (CAMA) to exchange experience.
- Cambodia shared 30 years of experience in clearing areas of mines and explosives, including its own demining methods, training of deminers, testing of equipment, public education and assistance to victims.
- Ukrainian pyrotechnicians have already been trained in Cambodia, and Cambodian specialists conducted training for Ukrainian sappers in Poland. Cooperation on training and knowledge sharing will continue.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine has declared the training and advanced training of pyrotechnicians one of the main priorities of the department for 2024. The interregional demining center is being moved to a safer region, and a new training base is also planned to be built.
According to Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Bohdan Drapyaty, borrowing the comprehensive approach of the Cambodian SMAS Center is extremely important for Ukraine. The better prepared sappers are, the more effective and safer demining will be.
