Ukraine strengthened its position in the global metallurgy industry in 2024
Despite the global reduction of iron and steel production in 2024, Ukraine was able to demonstrate positive dynamics and maintain its position among the leading producers of the metallurgical industry. These results became possible thanks to the efficient work of Ukrainian enterprises even in difficult conditions of war and economic challenges.
For information association Ukrmetalurgprom, which refers to Worldsteel data, the total production of pig iron in the world in 2024 decreased by 1.31% compared to the previous year and amounted to 1391.49 million tons. China remained the leader, producing 851.74 million tons, which is 61.2% of the world volume, although China also recorded a decline of 2.30%.
At the end of the year, Ukraine produced 7.09 million tons of pig iron, which is 18.1% more than in 2023. Thanks to this, the country retained the 13th place among the 40 leading manufacturers in the world, continuing to maintain its position on the international stage.
World steel production in 2024 amounted to 1,839.45 million tons, which is 0.91% less than in 2023. China remains the leader in this field as well, having smelted 1,005.09 million tons of steel, which corresponds to 54.6% of the total world volume.
Ukraine demonstrated significant progress, producing 7.58 million tons of steel, which is 21.64% more than the previous year. Thanks to this, the country rose to 20th place among 71 steel-producing countries, strengthening its position even in adverse conditions.
In addition to iron and steel, the volume of production of rolled products also increased in Ukraine. In 2024, Ukrainian enterprises produced 6.2 million tons of rolled steel, which is 15.8% more than in 2023. The results of January, when the increase in production amounted to 75.9% – from 257,000 tons in 2023 to 453,000 tons in 2024, were especially indicative.
