Ukraine switches to winter time: clocks should be set back one hour
On the night of Saturday to Sunday, October 26, Ukraine will traditionally switch to winter time. At four o’clock in the morning, it will be necessary to move the clock hands back one hour, that is, to three o’clock. Thanks to this, Ukrainians will get additional time for rest. Devices with automatic time updates, in particular smartphones and computers, will change the indicators without the participation of users.
The seasonal change of clocks in Ukraine is regulated by the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of May 13, 1996, which determines that the transition to summer time is carried out on the last Sunday of March, and to winter time – on the last Sunday of October.
Let us recall that the first time the clock hands in Ukraine were moved in 1981, when the state was part of the USSR. This was done to reduce electricity consumption and rational use of daylight.
In July 2024, the Verkhovna Rada supported bill No. 4201 on calculating time in Ukraine, which provided for the abolition of the transition to summer and winter time. After adoption, the document was signed by the speaker of the parliament and sent to the president for signature, but Volodymyr Zelensky did not approve it, so the current system of changing clocks remains unchanged.
Today, more than 60 countries in the world continue to observe seasonal time changes, including most European countries. In Russia, clock changes were abandoned several years ago, and this procedure is being forcibly extended to residents of temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories. Ukraine, on the other hand, maintains its time synchronization with the European standard and continues to adhere to the traditional transition between seasons.
