Ukraine will lose half of its cherry harvest due to frost: EastFruit

Due to the frosts observed in April, Ukraine will lose approximately 45-55% of the cherry crop and 35-50% of the cherry crop. About this are reported analysts of the EastFruit project.

Against the background of serious harvest losses of these crops in neighboring countries, a significant increase in prices is expected. After the occupation of parts of the southern regions, Ukraine became more dependent on cherry imports, so prices for this berry will probably be even higher this year. Especially considering that spring frosts affected orchards not only in Ukraine, but also in Eastern European countries and Turkey, which is the largest exporter of cherries in the region.

In Turkey, the cherry harvest is forecast to drop by 50-70%, and local experts expect prices to rise by 75%. This means that a similar price increase should be expected on the Ukrainian market of fresh cherries.

Two powerful waves of frost actually destroyed the harvest of most owners of cherry, cherry, apricot and peach orchards. In Transcarpathia and Bukovina, the harvest of stone crops was almost completely lost, while in the southern regions losses reached 60%. As a result, gardeners are scrambling to find ways to avoid bankruptcy, as many have started their gardens with loans, outside investments or grants that require job creation and tax payments.
