Ukrainian icebreaker “Noosphere” went on its fourth expedition to Antarctica

The Ukrainian research icebreaker “Noosphere” has started its fourth season of work in the Antarctic. The ship departed from Cape Town (South African Republic) and should arrive at the Akademik Vernadskyi station on New Year’s Eve. About this reported at the National Antarctic Science Center (NASC).

“Like the three previous Antarctic seasons, the fourth takes place during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Despite this, our state continues to fulfill its international obligations and ensure both the continuity of research at the Akademik Vernadskyi station and the implementation of international scientific projects funded by the EU.”, says the message.

All international research and projects are carried out with the financial support of Ukraine’s foreign partners.

At the beginning of the new season, the icebreaker will deliver a team of technical specialists to the “Akademik Vernadskyi” station, who will carry out urgent repair work during the short Antarctic summer. The plans include replacement of the sewage system, lighting devices, as well as reconstruction and expansion of the platform for meteorological research. At the end of the season, “Noosphere” will traditionally replace the annual Ukrainian Antarctic expeditions.

The National Antarctic Science Center recalled that from January 2022 to April 2024, the Noosphere icebreaker successfully completed three Antarctic seasons.
