Ukrainians paid more than 2 billion hryvnias for traffic violations

The system of automatic recording of violations of traffic rules in Ukraine has been in operation for four years. During this time, 265 cameras were installed on the roads in 25 cities of 15 regions. Thanks to the devices, it was possible to record more than 10 million violations, for which drivers were fined a total of 2.1 billion hryvnias.

Cameras are installed mainly on accident-prone road sections – places with the highest concentration of traffic accidents. Only during the past year, 50 new devices for automatic recording of violations appeared on the roads.

“During the four years of the system’s operation, the police issued more than 10 million decisions – that’s how many times we brought to justice violators of the speed regime and those who did not follow the rules of driving in the public transport lane. In total, 89% of the decisions were implemented and fines in the total amount of more than 2, 1 billion hryvnias,” he says Oleksiy Biloshitskyi, first deputy chief of the Patrol Police Department.

Speeding remains the most common violation among drivers. Speed is the cause of most traffic accidents.

Installing cameras on roads has already proven its effectiveness. During the four years of operation of the system of automatic recording of violations, the number of traffic accidents with serious consequences has decreased by almost three times.

“Prior to the launch of the recording system, the number of road traffic accidents with deaths and/or injuries in the places where control devices were installed was 541, currently – 175 (47 cases due to speeding). Our goal is “Vision Zero” (zero deaths on the roads) . And we are relentlessly going to her,” says Oleksiy Biloshitskyi.

If there have been fewer road accidents in places where cameras are installed, then in general, their number has slightly increased across the country this year. During January-April 2024, 6,475 road accidents were recorded in Ukraine. This is 6% more than was registered by the police in the first four months of last year. This year, 813 Ukrainians died as a result of traffic accidents.
