JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” received the first modern battery shunting tractors within the scope of the reconstruction and development project jointly with the European Bank “Extraordinary support of the Ukrainian railway”.
The new equipment is equipped with lithium-ion batteries with the possibility of quick recharging and autonomous operation for 24 hours. It is able to develop a speed of up to 10 km/h and move freight wagons with a total weight of up to 3 thousand tons. This will replace the old diesel locomotives that have been used at the company’s production facilities.
In the near future, the first tractors will start operating in key production units, which will make it possible to increase the efficiency of shunting operations thanks to high energy efficiency and ease of maintenance. It is important that the new equipment functions without emissions of CO₂ and harmful substances, and its operation costs less than diesel analogues, which will allow to direct the saved funds to the development of production capacities.
The purchase of battery-powered tractors is part of the modernization strategy of “Ukrzaliznytsia”, which provides for the development of infrastructure, the increase in the environmental friendliness of transportation, and the gradual integration of Ukrainian railways into European standards. The entire batch should be delivered by the end of 2026.
We remind you that on February 20, 2025, “Ukrzaliznytsia” signed a contract with the Bulgarian company Express Service OOD for the supply of ten such machines.
