UN wanted to help Ukrainian prosecutors with disabilities, but our law enforcement agencies refused: MP

Representatives of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime offered Ukraine a project to train investigators and prosecutors with disabilities, particularly in financial investigations. However, Ukrainian law enforcement agencies refused to participate in this initiative.

This was stated by Olga Vasilevskaya-Smaglyuk, MP from the Servant of the People party, against the backdrop of scandals related to the activities of medical and social expert commissions (MSECs). According to her, the aim of the project was to increase the capacity of Ukrainian law enforcement agencies to fight money laundering, which is a priority for the European Commission until the end of 2024.

The UN proposal included the development of a special training course and the arrangement of workplaces for people with disabilities adapted to their special needs. The course was to cover training for financial investigations, creating employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

Vasilevska-Smagliuk proposed that the project be implemented by the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Security Service of Ukraine, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau, the State Bureau of Investigation and the National Police. However, all of these agencies refused to participate, arguing that they did not have enough employees with disabilities and that there was no urgent need for financial investigations.

The MP sarcastically noted that a year ago, the Prosecutor General’s Office had only 11 employees with disabilities, and now their number has increased to 22, which demonstrates the growing need for such initiatives.

Earlier, the Prosecutor General’s Office reported that the largest number of prosecutors with disabilities is in Khmelnytsky and Cherkasy regions, where almost one in three prosecutors has a disability.
