Unemployment in Ukraine continues to grow: 118,500 people were registered in March

The number of registered unemployed in Ukraine in March 2024 increased by 7.9% compared to February, to 118.5 thousand people. This growth is taking place for the fourth month in a row, and the main factor is the increase in the number of unemployed women, which reached 7.6 thousand people in the last month, to 91.9 thousand.

About this informs “Interfax-Ukraine” with reference to the data of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

The tendency to increase unemployment has been observed since the beginning of 2024. In particular, among persons under the age of 35, the number of unemployed increased by 2.3 thousand to 27.1 thousand in March. As in previous months, the largest number of unemployed was recorded in the following regions: Zaporizhzhya (8.9 thousand), Kharkiv (8.6 thousand), Dnipropetrovsk (8.4 thousand), Sumy (7.3 thousand), Poltava (6.4 thousand)

Despite the increase in unemployment, the number of vacancies has also increased. According to the NBU, 44,500 vacancies were registered in March, compared to 41,000 in February. The number of unemployed people receiving benefits also increased from 46,600 to 51,200.

According to Danylo Hetmantsev, chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Finance, Tax and Customs Policy, the actual level of unemployment in Ukraine at the end of 2023 was twice as high as the pre-war year 2021, and amounted to 19%. This is due to the fact that many people avoid registering as unemployed in order to avoid being mobilized.

According to the forecasts of the Ministry of Economy, in order to restore the economy of Ukraine, the employment level of the population must increase by 67% by 2032.
