American and NATO officials are developing a new arms delivery model for Ukraine, which involves financing from the Allies to purchase or transfer American weapons. About this informs Reuters.
The USA, NATO and Ukraine are working together to create a mechanism that will allow Ukraine to be supplied with American weapons from the so-called Priority List of Ukraine’s needs. According to the plan, Ukraine will form lists of necessary armaments in tranches of approximately 500 million dollars. Under the coordination of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the Allies will decide who will pay for or donate specific items from this list.
If a NATO member country decides to transfer weapons to Ukraine, the new mechanism will allow it to quickly replenish its stockpile without lengthy procurement procedures from the United States. At the same time, the participating country will have to make a payment in advance — the funds can go to an account controlled by the US government (for example, in the Ministry of Finance) or to a special fund. The final funding structure has not yet been determined.
Within this mechanism, NATO countries will be able to transfer US funds, which will directly ensure the supply of weapons to Ukraine. Payments can be made both through NATO and directly to the US Department of Defense. The proposed approach complements the current system that allows the US president to transfer weapons from US stockpiles to allies in emergency situations.
These changes in transatlantic cooperation are being developed against the background of the statements of US President Donald Trump, who expressed dissatisfaction with Moscow’s continued aggression against Ukraine. Trump has threatened to impose tariffs against Russia if the Kremlin does not take steps to end the war by August 8.
