US imposes new economic sanctions against Cuban president and Castro family
The United States has imposed new economic sanctions against Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, his family members, and representatives of the family of former Cuban leader Raul Castro. This was reported by The Guardian.
The sanctions list includes Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, his wife and stepson, as well as relatives of former President Raul Castro, including his son and grandson.
The restrictions do not only apply to individuals. The Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba, the Cuban Institute of Friendship with Peoples, and several other structures were also subject to sanctions.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that those who cooperate with organizations against which sanctions have already been imposed may also be subject to restrictions. According to him, foreign banks and companies should stop servicing such structures, otherwise they themselves risk being subject to sanctions.
Washington notes that these measures are aimed at a network that, according to the American side, supports “subversive activities” of the Cuban regime.
On May 1, Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing sanctions against individuals responsible for repression in Cuba and creating threats to US national security and foreign policy.
