Uzhhorod airport transferred to the Ministry of Internal Affairs: what is planned to be done with the airport

The most remote Ukrainian airport, located in Uzhhorod, has been transferred to the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA). The agency intends to create a European hub for civil defense air support on its base. About this in interview Viktor Mykyta, Deputy Head of the Office of the President for Regional Policy, told LB.ua.
He noted that currently the issue of opening the airport for regular flights remains on hold, but the airport in Uzhhorod can be used for non-regular charter flights.
“The policy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs allows this. The State Emergency Service is a civil aviation, not a military one. Military aircraft cannot be there, logistics are generally unsuccessful.”, — explained Nikita.
He also noted that the distance between Kyiv and the Transcarpathian region is 800 km, which makes it sometimes more convenient to travel through Poland. To improve access to Uzhhorod, it is necessary to develop road and rail connections.
Previously, the Transcarpathian Regional Prosecutor’s Office initiated a legal process regarding the return to communal ownership of a plot of land with an area of 0.20 hectares, located under the aircraft parking lot at the Uzhhorod Airport. Also in March of this year, the Transcarpathian Regional Council decided to liquidate the utility company “Uzhgorod International Airport”, but this decision was not publicly announced at that time.
