Viktor Orban called Ukraine an enemy of Hungary

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared that Ukraine is an enemy of his state. He made this assessment during a speech at an “anti-war rally” in the city of Szombathely. This is reported by “European Truth” with reference to the Hungarian publication Index.

The head of the Hungarian government explained his words by Kyiv’s position on the energy policy of the European Union. According to him, Ukraine constantly calls on Brussels to deprive Hungary of access to cheap Russian energy, which, according to Orban, will inevitably lead to a sharp increase in utility costs for Hungarian households.

“Anyone who says this is an enemy of Hungary, therefore Ukraine is our enemy,” – said Viktor Orban.

He also emphasized that in the event of abandoning the policy of reducing tariffs, the annual expenses of Hungarian families on utility services could increase by 1 million forints, which is about 2,600 euros.

At the same time, Orban admitted that the geographical proximity forces Budapest to maintain working contacts with Kyiv. However, according to him, Ukraine’s admission to membership in the European Union is unacceptable.

Against this backdrop, Hungary on February 2 filed a lawsuit with the Court of Justice of the European Union regarding the REPowerEU Regulation, which provides for a ban on the import of Russian gas to EU countries. Despite the lawsuit, the European Union plans to implement the adopted legislation and completely abandon Russian gas in 2027.

Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Szybiga, in an interview with EuroPravda, called Viktor Orbán a threat to Hungarian society and to Transcarpathian Hungarians. He also explained his tough statements towards Budapest and said that Ukraine is preparing for different scenarios of events after the parliamentary elections in Hungary, scheduled for April.
