Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a telephone conversation with Donald Trump: they discussed the ceasefire and sanctions against Russia
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi spent a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, the main topics of which were ending the war, sanctions pressure on Russia and strengthening defense cooperation.
Zelensky described the conversation as “productive”, noting that the main focus was on efforts to achieve a fair and lasting peace. During the dialogue, he emphasized that Ukraine supports the idea of an immediate ceasefire, but Russia has systematically disrupted all previous peace initiatives, continuing attacks on civilian infrastructure and energy facilities. According to Zelenskyi, the cause of the war is Russia’s desire to conquer neighboring nations.
“We need to stop the killing as soon as possible. We fully support that.” he emphasized.
The parties discussed the situation at the front. Zelensky noted that Trump is aware of the latest Russian strikes on Kyiv and other cities.
The topics of sanctions were also touched upon:
“The economy of the Russian Federation is falling, and Moscow is feeling it. Trump’s determination can change the course of events.”
A separate part of the conversation concerned defense cooperation with NATO. The President of Ukraine thanked the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Denmark for more than $1 billion intended for the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine.
In addition, a possible bilateral agreement with the US regarding drones was discussed. According to Zelenskyi, Ukraine has already prepared a corresponding project and is ready for negotiations, stressing that such an agreement can become one of the strongest defense agreements between states.
