“Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders. They must determine their own future. I feel a strong desire to move towards independence. We don’t want to be Danes, we don’t want to be Americans, we want to be Greenlanders.” Mute Egede emphasized.
The statement was made during a press conference in Copenhagen. Egede noted that the status quo is no longer an acceptable option and it is necessary to find a new way in relations with Denmark. He also emphasized the importance of cooperation with the US, but emphasized that it should take place on Greenland’s terms.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, in her turn, emphasized that relations between Denmark and Greenland remain strong, and expressed a desire to strengthen the commonwealth, not destroy it.
