What Ukrainians should know about insurance before traveling to Poland

Poland, being a full member of the European Union, is an important country of temporary residence for many Ukrainian refugees. However, like any EU country, Poland has strict entry requirements and one of the key aspects is health insurance. This especially applies to those who come for long-term residence. Health insurance is not only a legal requirement, but also an important security element that ensures access to medical services when needed. What should you know about insurance before traveling to Poland?

Who needs insurance to enter Poland?

A medical insurance policy is required for several categories of visitors to enter Poland for a short or long term. In particular, Ukrainians planning to stay in the country on a Schengen visa must have an insurance policy. This also applies to those who travel for the purpose of tourism, business or just a short-term visit to the country. In addition, health insurance is also provided for people who plan to stay in Poland for a long time, in particular on student or work visas.

Types of insurance

  1. Short-term visas (type C visa). In order to obtain a Schengen visa, which allows a stay in Poland for up to 90 days, it is mandatory to have health insurance. The policy must cover medical expenses in the amount of at least 30,000 euros and be valid throughout the territory of the Schengen area. It should also include emergency medical care and repatriation in case of serious illness or accident.
  2. Long-term visas (type D visa). For people planning a long stay in Poland, for example, for study or work, health insurance is mandatory. Such a policy should cover the entire period of residence and ensure access to medical services in the country. In addition, there may be additional insurance requirements depending on the requirements of the consulate.

Franchise

One of the key aspects of any insurance policy is the deductible. Deductible means the amount that the insured is obliged to pay in the event of an insured event before the insurance policy becomes effective. In Polish policies, there are two options for the deductible: zero or 50 euros. The choice of deductible affects the cost of insurance: a policy with a zero deductible will be more expensive, but the insured will not pay any additional funds in the event of an insured event. A policy with a €50 deductible means that for each insured event the insured pays the first €50 on his own.

What insurance do Ukrainians need?

Medical insurance is not mandatory for citizens of Ukraine who enjoy the status of temporary protection in Poland due to hostilities. They have access to the Polish health insurance system (NFZ). However, if a Ukrainian is planning a trip outside of Poland, for example, to other EU countries, a medical policy may become necessary to obtain access to medical services in another country.

Additional insurance can be beneficial even for those with access to the NFZ, as it usually covers a wider range of insured events, including those not covered by the state system.

Student insurance

If you plan to study in Poland, you will also need health insurance. Students can choose one of two insurance options:

  1. Insurance policy from a private insurance company.
  2. Policy of the National Health Fund (NFZ).

The main difference is that the NFZ policy is valid only on the territory of Poland. If the student plans to travel outside of Poland, this policy will not apply in other EU countries. Therefore, it is recommended to purchase additional insurance for such cases.

Green card

If you plan to enter Poland in your own car, you need to issue a Green Card. This policy is mandatory not only for entering Poland, but also for moving around the territory of the European Union. The green card protects drivers in the event of traffic accidents and provides financial coverage for damage caused to third parties.

Additional insurance services

On the Visit Ukraine portal, you can purchase any type of insurance necessary for traveling abroad. This can be health insurance for a Schengen visa, a travel policy or other types of insurance. The application process takes only a few minutes, and policies can be obtained online, which greatly simplifies the process of preparing for a trip.

Health insurance is an important component when planning a trip to Poland. According to the purpose of the trip (tourism, study, work or other needs) and the length of stay, it is worth choosing the appropriate policy that will ensure access to the necessary medical services and meet the requirements of the Polish authorities and consulates. In addition to mandatory requirements, it is worth considering additional types of insurance that can provide more advantages in case of unforeseen situations.
