1.9 million express tests for detection of hepatitis B and C have arrived in Ukraine

About 1.9 million express tests for the detection of markers of viral hepatitis B and C have been delivered to Ukraine. The purchase was made with the funds of the 2025 state budget by order of the Ministry of Health, and the tests have already arrived at the warehouse of SE Medical Procurement of Ukraine.

The distribution of the first million tests (500,000 each for hepatitis B and C) has already begun. Their transportation to medical institutions across the country will continue throughout September and October.

More than 850,000 test systems of two types (413,363 for the diagnosis of hepatitis C and 445,324 for hepatitis B) remain in stock and will be sent to the regions after the distribution is completed. Delivery is carried out in cooperation with the Public Health Center of the Ministry of Health.

Viral hepatitis B and C are infectious diseases of the liver that are transmitted mainly through contact with blood. Hepatitis B usually turns into a chronic form and requires long-term or even lifelong treatment. In most cases, hepatitis C is cured with modern drugs in three to six months.

The danger is that viral hepatitis often has no manifestations for a long time. Symptoms often appear already at the stage of complications, such as fibrosis, cirrhosis or liver cancer. That is why regular testing is absolutely necessary: early detection makes it possible to start antiviral treatment in a timely manner and prevent the development of serious consequences.

According to the Center of Public Health, in 2024, more than 1.1 million people were tested for hepatitis B in Ukraine, of which 1.2% received a positive result. More than 420,000 people were tested for hepatitis C, and 6.1% were found to be infected.

The Ministry of Health recommends testing at least once a year. People at increased risk of infection, particularly after tattoos, piercings or medical procedures involving skin damage, should be tested annually. Regular testing is also required in case of unprotected sexual contact or sharing of personal hygiene items.

Screening for hepatitis B and C is free and available at primary care facilities. You can take the test directly during an appointment with a family doctor.
