Andy Burnham announces intention to move government officials to Manchester after taking over as Cabinet Minister
Andy Burnham, who is seen as a likely successor to Keir Starmer as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, said that if he heads the government, he will transfer some of his office staff to Manchester. This is reported by Sky News.
Presenting a vision for public administration reform, Burnham noted that the new office should become a center for the redistribution of powers and resources between regions. He called it No 10 North and said that through this structure the government will coordinate work at the national and local levels.
The “nerve center of a renewed Britain”, — said Burnham.
The politician named the development of a long-term economic strategy and support for regions in defining new economic growth targets as key tasks of the new office.
Burnham also outlined three main priorities: reform of critical public services, reindustrialization and the regeneration of cities and communities. He named achieving equal living conditions in all parts of the country as a separate goal.
On June 22, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that his term in office was coming to an end. The official competition for the post of leader of the Labour Party is due to begin in July, but Burnham is already being called one of the main contenders.
The office he proposed in Manchester should be part of a wider reform aimed at strengthening the role of regions in the public administration of Great Britain.
