According to Palestinian medics, the dead journalists include: Mohammed Salama of Al Jazeera, Hossam al Masri of Reuters, Moaz Abu Taha, who worked with Reuters, freelance journalist Mariam Abu Daka, who has worked freelance for the AP and other media since the beginning of the war in Gaza, and Ahmed Abu Aziz.
Photographer Hatem Khaled, who worked for Reuters, was injured. Later, Al Jazeera, citing the staff of the “Nasser” hospital, reported that as a result of shelling by Israeli forces on a tent camp in the Mawasi district of Khan Younis, local journalist Hassan Dohan was killed. Cameraman Hussam al-Masri was killed in the first strike, while photographer Hatem Khaled was injured in the second strike on the hospital.
According to the representatives of the hospital, Israel carried out a second attack on the medical facility, which killed other journalists, as well as rescuers and medics who arrived at the scene to help the victims. Health officials also reported that one of the rescuers was among the dead.
The IDF confirmed the attack on the hospital. The Chief of the General Staff of the Israeli Army ordered an investigation into the incident.
“The IDF regrets any harm caused to bystanders and does not persecute journalists as such. The IDF is acting to minimize harm to outsiders while ensuring the safety of the Israel Defense Forces” troops, the IDF said in a statement.
