As a result of the Trump administration’s decision, 530 thousand migrants lost their legal status

Donald Trump’s administration has decided to revoke the temporary legal status of 530,000 citizens of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela, which could lead to the threat of deportation for many of them. According to a notice from the federal authorities, this status will expire on April 24, informs Reuters.

In 2022, the Joe Biden administration launched the CHNV program, which allowed migrants from these countries to legalize with American sponsors. Program participants and their immediate family members were granted entry and could legally stay in the US for two years.

The Biden administration said that this program is designed to reduce the number of illegal crossings on the southern border of the United States. At the same time, the cancellation of temporary legal status can provoke mass accelerated deportations. How many of these 530,000 migrants have already obtained another legal status for staying in the United States is unknown.

We will remind that on March 6, some media reported that the Trump administration is also considering canceling temporary protection for about 240,000 Ukrainians who were fleeing the war with Russia. In addition, there were 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans, as well as 70,000 Afghans who fled the Taliban regime.

However, the spokeswoman of the White House, Caroline Levitt, denied this information, saying that the journalists “do not understand what they are talking about”, and assured that no official decision has been made on this issue yet.
